Future of Perth Freight Link stage two thrown into doubt by WA Premier Colin Barnett
WA Premier Colin Barnett said the Government had not made a decision on whether stage two would go ahead.
Further doubt has been cast on when, or even if, stage
two of the $1.6 billion Perth Freight Link project will go ahead, with
WA Premier Colin Barnett saying there is no firm timeframe in place.
The
Premier's latest comments come as the Senate moves to conduct an
inquiry into the decision-making process used to commission the joint
state-federal project. The freight link has been touted by the State Government as an integrated traffic solution to get heavy vehicles from Perth's industrial eastern suburbs to Fremantle Port.
The project is being undertaken in two sections. The first, known as Roe 8, would extend Roe Highway from Kwinana Freeway to Stock Road.
Section two would then link Roe Highway to the Stirling Bridge, and Fremantle Port itself.
Transport Minister Dean Nalder told Parliament yesterday that contracts for stage two to extend Roe Highway to Stirling Bridge would be finalised by end of the year.
But arriving at Parliament this morning, Mr Barnett suggested there was no firm timeline for stage two.
"I don't think we are going to be building a road very soon. Roe 8 is our priority. Now that's a big project. We haven't started construction on that. We're heading toward construction," he said.
